Annual Letters
January 1, 2021
Team,
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful holiday.
I am responding to a previous thread to include those that are new to the firm.
More so than ever I feel fortunate for the time and space to reflect on the events of this past year. 2020 was challenging for so many.
In years past I have shared my perspectives on the values and culture that I believed would lead Thrive to becoming the best version of itself. This year I felt like it would be more appropriate to recognize our actions. This year we walked the walk.
As I have expressed many times before "it is easy to be a captain on calm waters." As a firm we navigated through the eye of the storm with integrity, compassion, humility, and kindness. Our values were tested often and we never wavered.
We supported our founders during a volatile time. A mentor once shared with me that he believed that "people do not change - situations do." We stood by our longstanding mission to support our entrepreneurs in both good times and bad.
We were clear headed and invested with conviction in moments of incredible uncertainty. Our creativity led us to incubate more companies than we ever have before and our grit and tenacity enabled us to create opportunities for ourselves at later stages.
We lived our values and did our best to help the world evolve. We recognized the responsibility that we have as a firm to do our part and know that there is so much more for us to do.
We supported each other. This year was challenging for many on the team in different ways and we did our part to be there for one another. We came together often and overcame incredible adversity. There is nothing that we cannot do if we continue to work together and support each other.
This coming September marks the 10 year anniversary of Thrive raising its first institutional fund. While I am amazed by all that we have accomplished I am certain that the best is yet to come. I truly am proud that we still identify as an underdog. If we maintain our ambition and humility I am certain that we will achieve our goals as a firm.
There truly is so much more that we need to do in order to reach our full potential. We are far from becoming the best version of ourselves.
Prior notes have alluded to the hard work ahead of us. In addition to recognizing all that we need to do in the future I wanted to express that I truly am proud of who we are today. Not just as investors, but more so as team members and humans.
Wishing everyone the best for a year filled with love, health and happiness.
yours,
Josh
