January 1, 2019

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful holiday.

I find myself reflective this time of year. It is a unique moment in time to think carefully about my personal values and ambitions for the year ahead.

I truly am amazed by what Thrive has become. Our accomplishments are remarkable. It is clear to me that the best is yet to come.

My greatest fear for Thrive is that as we grow we lose the values that have enabled us to succeed. I wanted to share several thoughts regarding the values that I hope that we portray as a firm this coming year.

  • Arrogance and complacency are destructive human behaviors. It is important that we handle our successes with humility as the journey ahead to achieve true greatness is long and hard. We must know our true position within the market. We are not the leading firm in the industry and until we are we should not be satisfied. We have prevailed to date as we have self identified as an underdog. We have been bold, creative and unconventional. The moment that we believe that we are successful is the moment that we are likely to fail. We must continue to learn and iterate. We must continue to question our failures as well as our successes. We must continue to push each other as we all can always improve.

  • I believe that a main ingredient in winning is having the grit and tenacity to outwork your opponent. There simply is no replacement for hard work. Work ethic should not only be defined by hours in an office. It is ones willingness to push themselves to learn and grow. It is my intention to work harder this year in every capacity than any year before.

  • We must continue to support each other and work as a team. Collaboration is an ingredient that is uncommon in our industry. We will continue to win if we fight for each other. We will continue to win if we protect each other. We will continue to win if we question each other. We will continue to win if we learn from each other.

  • We must remain unconventional. Many of our successes have come from our willingness to be bold. As we become more mature as an organization we must not lose our audacity.

  • Integrity is a value that must never be compromised. Life is short and life is long. The world is small and the world is large. Doing the right thing is always the right thing to do in ANY circumstance. Being kind and honest is not just right - it is also good business.

  • We must never lose sight of our purpose. We work hard because we hope to enable innovation. Our ambition is to help entrepreneurs create the most impactful businesses of our generation. It is important that we remind ourselves that our work is important and that we must do everything possible to support those that we have partnered with.

  • Finally...Be present. Have gratitude. Have balance.

It is an honor to work with and learn from all of you. Wishing everyone the best for a year ahead filled with health and happiness.

yours,
Josh
